About the school

The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) is the world's #1 veterinary school (QS World University Rankings 2021–2024) and the UK's oldest and largest veterinary school, founded in 1791. The 5-year BVetMed programme spans two campuses: Camden (preclinical years 1–2, central London) and Hawkshead in Hertfordshire (clinical years 3–5).

Admission requires 140 hours of work experience (70 clinical + 70 non-clinical) and success in a competitive MMI interview. Approximately 110 places per year with a ~13% acceptance rate.

Academic requirements, fees, and interview format verified against rvc.ac.uk (April 2026). QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024. Acceptance rate estimated from UCAS published data. All figures subject to annual revision.

Campus & Facilities

The RVC operates across two main sites. The Camden Campus in central London hosts preclinical teaching (Years 1–2) alongside the Comparative Biomedical Sciences building, anatomy labs, and student facilities. The Hawkshead Campus in Hertfordshire (32 km north of London) is home to clinical training (Years 3–5), the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals (one of the largest small-animal referral hospitals in Europe), the Equine Referral Hospital, and a farm animal unit with cattle, sheep, and horses.

Students enjoy the best of both worlds: London for cultural life, Hawkshead for immersive farm-to-clinic rural training.

Academic requirements

  • A-levels: AAA — Biology and Chemistry required; third subject open.
  • GCSEs: Grade B (or 6) or above in English Language, Mathematics, and Double Science (or separate sciences).
  • UCAT: Required — most successful applicants score above the 60th percentile.
  • No BMAT since 2023.
  • International Baccalaureate: 36 points with 6,6,6 in Higher Level, including Biology and Chemistry HL.

Work experience

RVC requires a minimum of 3 weeks of animal/veterinary work experience, split across at least two different species groups. At least one placement must be with a farm animal veterinary practice.

  • Small animal veterinary practice (cats/dogs)
  • Farm animal or equine practice
  • Zoo, wildlife, or research setting

Quality of reflection matters more than raw hours — admissions tutors look for insight into the profession, not just time logged. Keep a work-experience diary and prepare to discuss what you observed at interview.

FAQ

Does RVC require the BMAT?
No. RVC discontinued BMAT use. Selection is based on UCAS application (including supplementary questions) and MMI interview performance.
Do I need UCAT for RVC?
Yes — RVC requires the UCAT. Most successful applicants score above the 60th percentile. RVC no longer requires BMAT (removed from 2023 entry onwards). Register for UCAT in July and sit it by October.
What is the MMI format at RVC?
~9–10 stations × 5 minutes each. Stations test: motivation, ethical reasoning, clinical scenarios, communication, teamwork. There is no set "script" — you are assessed on thinking process, not memorised answers.
How long is the RVC BVMBVSc?
Five years. Pre-clinical years (1–2) are at the Camden Campus in London; clinical years (3–5) are at the Hawkshead Campus in Hertfordshire. Students without A-level Chemistry can apply for the Foundation Year (6 years total).
What counts for the 140h work experience?
70 hours must be in a clinical veterinary setting (vet practice, farm, zoo, laboratory). The remaining 70 can be in any animal-related role. Quality of reflection matters — you should be able to discuss what you observed.
What work experience do I need for RVC?
A minimum of 3 weeks across at least 2 different species groups. At least one placement must include farm animal experience with a vet. Keep a reflective diary — the MMI will probe your experiences in depth.
What A-level grades does RVC require?
Standard offer: AAA (including Chemistry + Biology or BTEC Science). Widening Participation offer: ABB for eligible candidates. Contextual offers available.
What is the RVC interview format?
RVC uses Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI) with approximately 8–10 stations of ~7 minutes each. Stations cover ethics, communication, work experience, science, and current veterinary affairs. Held at Hawkshead Campus.
Can international students apply to RVC?
Yes. International fees are £47,960/year (2024-25). A wide range of international qualifications are accepted. Contact RVC admissions for GCSE equivalency guidance.
