About the school

The University of Surrey's five-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Science (BVMSci, Hons) is one of the more recently established UK veterinary degrees, with the school opening around 2014 and its first cohort graduating in 2019. It uses a partnership-based clinical teaching model: rather than running a single large teaching hospital for all years, Surrey delivers clinical training through an extensive network of veterinary practice partners, alongside hands-on practical workshops from early in the course.

The BVMSci is accredited by the RCVS and EAEVE, and graduates are recognised for registration by the AVBC (Australia/New Zealand) and SAVC (South Africa). Surrey has invested heavily in purpose-built facilities, including a veterinary pathology centre.

Verified at surrey.ac.uk (BVMSci course pages, 2026/27 entry), IDP and theuniguide.co.uk for grades, and a 2026 sector cost guide for the international fee, June 2026. Fees subject to annual revision.

Campus & Facilities

The School of Veterinary Medicine is based at Surrey's Manor Park campus in Guildford, alongside student accommodation and the Surrey Sports Park. Final-year students complete a series of four-week intramural rotation placements in the partner-practice network across a range of species and disciplines.

FAQ

What is distinctive about Surrey's clinical teaching model?
Rather than running one large central teaching hospital, Surrey delivers clinical training through a wide network of partner veterinary practices. This means students gain experience across a diverse range of real-world practices and species contexts from early in the course. In the final year, students complete four-week intramural rotation placements within the partner-practice network. Surrey also has a purpose-built veterinary pathology centre and substantial on-campus practical facilities.
Is work experience essential for Surrey?
Work experience with animals is strongly encouraged — it helps you understand the realities of the profession and demonstrates commitment — but the school states it is not strictly essential. You will be asked to reflect on any experience you have in the online questionnaire. Verify the current guidance at surrey.ac.uk.
What A-level grades do I need?
The standard entry requirement is AAB, including grade A in Biology (or Human Biology) and grade A in Chemistry. The third A-level must be at grade B and cannot be General Studies or Critical Thinking. A pass in the science practical endorsement is required. IB applicants typically need approximately 34–35 points with Biology and Chemistry at Higher Level grade 6. Verify the current requirements at surrey.ac.uk.
What is the interview process like at Surrey?
Surrey uses a two-stage process: first, shortlisted applicants complete an online questionnaire sent by email, which must be returned within a short deadline. Those who pass proceed to an online Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) lasting up to about one hour, typically held between November and January. The MMI assesses motivation, communication, ethics and professional awareness. Verify current interview details at surrey.ac.uk.
What accreditations does Surrey's BVMSci hold?
The BVMSci is fully accredited by the RCVS (UK) and the EAEVE (European/Irish accreditation body). Graduates are also recognised for registration by the AVBC (Australia and New Zealand) and the SAVC (South Africa), providing good international mobility for graduates.
