About the school

The University of Liverpool runs a five-year Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc). Liverpool's veterinary school has a long heritage as the first UK veterinary school to be part of a university and the first to offer a degree in veterinary science.

The BVSc holds one of the widest accreditation profiles of any UK vet school: RCVS (UK), EAEVE (Europe/Ireland), AVBC (Australia/New Zealand), SAVC (South Africa) and AVMA (North America) — supporting graduates who want to work internationally. The university provides all of its own teaching across the five years, using its own farms, teaching horses and clinics.

Verified at liverpool.ac.uk (BVSc course + how-to-apply pages), UCAS, theuniguide.co.uk, and a 2026 sector cost guide for the international fee, June 2026. Fees subject to annual revision.

Campus & Facilities

Years 1–3 are based at the central Liverpool city campus; years 4–5 move to the Leahurst site on the Wirral peninsula, home to the teaching hospitals, farms and a renowned equine centre. Final-year students complete around 31 weeks of clinical rotations (over 90% at Leahurst) plus extra-mural studies (EMS) in commercial practice.

FAQ

Does Liverpool use my personal statement?
No. The University of Liverpool explicitly does not use the UCAS personal statement in its selection process. Your motivation, communication skills and professional insight are assessed entirely at the online MMI stage. Focus your preparation on the MMI, not the personal statement.
How much work experience do I need?
At least three weeks (15 days) of work experience, including a minimum of one week in a veterinary practice. If you cannot secure a vet-practice placement, you must also complete the free "Virtual Work Experience and Exploring the Veterinary Profession" MOOC (in addition to your 15 days). Evidence must be submitted via a separate online form — applications without it are automatically rejected. Check the exact deadline at liverpool.ac.uk.
What grades do I need for the Liverpool BVSc?
The standard offer is AAA at A-level, including Biology (or Human Biology) and Chemistry. If Chemistry is not taken at A-level it must be at AS level (grade B+). Your third A-level cannot be General Studies or Critical Thinking. You also need at least five GCSEs at grade 7 (A) including two sciences, plus grade 6 (B) in English and Maths. No UCAT, BMAT or ESAT is required.
Where will I study?
Years 1–3 are based at the central Liverpool city campus. Years 4–5 move to Leahurst on the Wirral peninsula, home to the veterinary teaching hospitals, farms and an equine centre. Final-year students complete around 31 weeks of clinical rotations, predominantly at Leahurst, plus extra-mural placements in commercial practice.
Can I practise abroad with a Liverpool BVSc?
Yes. Liverpool's BVSc is accredited by five bodies: RCVS (UK), EAEVE (Europe/Ireland), AVBC (Australia and New Zealand), SAVC (South Africa) and AVMA (North America). This is one of the broadest international accreditation profiles of any UK vet school and supports graduates wishing to practise in many countries around the world.
