About the school

The University of Nottingham's School of Veterinary Medicine and Science opened in 2006 — the first new veterinary school built in the UK for about 50 years — and is fully accredited (RCVS, EAEVE, AVMA), supporting international practice eligibility.

The five-year course is hands-on from day one and is taught through body-system modules that are revisited as clinical subjects later in the course. Uniquely, students also gain an integrated BVMedSci research degree after year three, without adding an extra year. Nottingham consistently scores highly for student satisfaction.

Campus & Facilities

Teaching is based at the rural Sutton Bonington campus (near Loughborough), a ~420-acre site with a farm, dairy centre and purpose-built veterinary facilities. Clinical training is delivered partly through a network of external Clinical Associate practices, giving a broad real-world caseload, with a largely lecture-free final year of rotations.

Academic requirements

  • A-level: AAB — A in Biology (or Human Biology), A in Chemistry, and B in a third subject (excluding Citizenship Studies, Critical Thinking, General Studies, Global Perspectives). A pass in the science practical endorsement where assessed separately.
  • IB: 32 points overall, or 6,6,5 in three Higher Level subjects (including HL Biology and Chemistry).
  • GCSE: five at grade 7 (A) including Biology and Chemistry and either Physics or Maths; grade 6 (B) in Maths and 4 (C) in English Language.
  • No UCAT/BMAT/ESAT required.

Nottingham requires a portfolio of at least ~5 weeks of relevant experience within the three years before applying — built from a mix of animal-handling placements (vet practice, kennels/cattery, farm, stables, zoo, etc.), some customer-facing/teamwork experience, and up to a week or two for its free online Virtual Work Experience course.
